Season

Pyramid Lake can fish well for Lahontan cutthroat throughout much of the year, with each season offering a slightly different experience.

Fall (October–November): Cooling water pulls fish closer to the shoreline and structure. Expect a mix of indicator and stripping techniques, with good chances at numbers of quality fish and some larger trout starting to show.
Winter (December–February): Cold, crisp days and some of the best trophy potential of the year. Fishing can be slower but very rewarding, with big fish cruising within casting range. Proper layering and preparation for cold, changeable weather are essential.
Spring (March–April): Peak time for many anglers. Water temps rise, trout move shallow, and action can be steady. Expect a combination of indicator rigs and retrieving flies from ladders or the shoreline, with regular shots at large fish.
Summer (May–June): Warmer weather and longer days offer a more relaxed feel. Fish often hold deeper, and early or late sessions are typically most productive. When conditions line up, this can be a comfortable time to explore the lake and learn its structure.

Access & Typical Day

Your day typically starts with an early meet-up near Reno or Sparks, followed by a short drive to Pyramid Lake. Your guide will review the plan for the day, current conditions, and the techniques you will be using before you step into the water or climb onto the ladder.

Once on site, your guide will set up rods, select flies, and position you in productive water, whether that means fishing from ladders, wading along key beaches, or launching a boat when appropriate. Instruction is tailored to your experience level, with an emphasis on efficient casting, effective retrieves, and reading the lake.
